2. Upload recent test results if you’re ready to buy hearing aids
3. Book an in-office diagnostic evaluation with one of our providers

Online test or in-person evaluation?

An online test is a good starting point when you want a quick hearing check from home. If you’re buying hearing aids, we can let you know whether the online results are sufficient or whether you need a professional hearing test.

A diagnostic hearing evaluation with one of our providers is the most thorough option. It includes a physical examination of your ears, testing with equipment called an audiometer, and a face-to-face discussion of your results and recommendations.
A diagnostic evaluation can identify the type and degree of hearing loss and help determine whether hearing aids, medical follow-up or another next step is appropriate.

You’ll likely benefit more from (or need) an in-person diagnostic evaluation if:

• This is your first time getting your hearing tested
• Your hearing has changed noticeably or recently
• You have symptoms like ringing (tinnitus), dizziness, ear pain, or drainage
• Hearing loss is worse in one ear than the other
• You want a medical-grade result to guide treatment or rule out an underlying issue

What to expect at an in-office evaluation

Your appointment with one of our providers typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The exact tests performed will depend on your symptoms and hearing needs.
Case history

Your provider will ask about your hearing concerns, symptoms, medical history and exposure to loud noise.

Visual ear exam

Your provider will use an otoscope to look inside your ears and check for wax, obstructions or other visible concerns.

Diagnostic hearing tests

You’ll listen and respond to tones, words and other sounds. Your evaluation may include:

• Air conduction testing
• Bone conduction testing
• Speech testing
• Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) testing
• Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing
• Tympanometry or acoustic immittance testing

These tests can measure the softest sounds you hear, how clearly you understand speech and whether different parts of your hearing system are working as expected.

Review of your results

Your provider will explain the type and degree of any hearing loss and answer your questions.

Personal recommendations

If hearing loss is found, you will discuss your options. Recommendations may include hearing aids, monitoring your hearing, further medical evaluation or another appropriate next step.

How to prepare for a hearing test

A few simple steps can help you get the most from your appointment:

• Bring previous hearing tests or other relevant medical records
• Bring a current list of medications and supplements
• Write down your symptoms, including when they began, whether one ear is worse and whether you have ringing or dizziness
• Avoid loud noise immediately before your appointment, including concerts, power tools and loud headphones
• Don’t use cotton swabs to clean your ears beforehand, since they can push wax deeper
• Wear your current hearing aids if you have them so we can check how they are performing
• Bring a friend or relative along with you, if possible. They can share what they’ve noticed, ask questions, and help you remember the information discussed

For an online test, just find a quiet room, use headphones if you have them, and set aside a few undistracted minutes.

Yes. Our online hearing test is completely free and takes just a few minutes.

Does insurance cover an in-office hearing evaluation?

Coverage varies by insurance plan, and some plans may require a referral. Contact us before your appointment and we can check your coverage and explain your best hearing care payment options.

How long does a hearing test take?

The online test takes a few minutes. An in-office diagnostic evaluation usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what’s needed.

Do I need a hearing test to buy hearing aids?

Yes. Our providers can’t program hearing aids to your needs without your results. You can take our online test, upload a recent test from a licensed hearing care professional, or book an evaluation with us. If you recently had a hearing test with a licensed hearing care professional and are looking to replace or upgrade your hearing aids, you can upload your results when you buy hearing aids online. We’ll review your test results, program your new hearing aids for your hearing loss and ship them to your door. Remote follow-up adjustments are also available.

Do I have to come into the office?

Not always. But first-time wearers and people with new, one-sided or complex symptoms are generally better served in person.
