Hearing Aid Fittings

A hearing aid fitting is the appointment where your hearing aids are programmed to your specific hearing loss and set up to fit and feel right. Your provider will fine-tune the sound, checks the physical fit, and shows you how to wear, charge, and care for your devices. At Prescription Hearing you can be fitted in our Palos Park office or remotely from home using your smartphone or tablet. A first fitting usually takes about an hour, and it’s the step that turns a new pair of hearing aids into ones that actually work for your life.

What is a hearing aid fitting?

Buying hearing aids is only half the process. A fitting is what makes them yours. They’re programmed to match the exact pattern of your hearing loss based on your hearing test. A fitting is the appointment where your provider:

  • Programs your hearing aids to your specific hearing needs
  • Checks that they physically fit your ears comfortably
  • Fine-tunes the sound so speech is clear and everyday noise isn’t overwhelming
  • Teaches you how to insert, remove, charge, and clean them
  • Sets you up with the app so you can adjust things and get support later

Why the fitting matters

New hearing aids can sound strange at first. Even your own voice and the rustle of paper can seem loud, because your brain hasn’t heard those sounds clearly in a while. A proper fitting eases you into it, setting realistic starting levels and giving your provider a baseline to fine-tune from as you adjust. It’s less a one-and-done event and more the beginning of getting your hearing dialed in.

Skipping or rushing the fitting is the most common reason people feel their hearing aids “don’t work.” A good hearing aid fitting gets you hearing well, and so does your mindset. Studies have found that people who approach hearing aids with a positive, patient attitude tend to adjust faster and get more out of them. Bringing a family member or close friend along for that optimism helps, too.

What to expect at a hearing aid fitting

Here’s the general flow of a first fitting, whether in person or virtual:

  1. Review your hearing test. Your provider confirms your results and the plan for your hearing aids.
  2. First listen. Your hearing aids are switched on and programmed to your prescription. You’ll hear the world through them for the first time and share how it sounds.
  3. Fine-tuning. Based on your feedback (and sometimes a quick verification test to confirm you’re getting enough sound where you need it) your provider adjusts volume, clarity, and how background noise is handled. You may be asked to answer a few questions about what you hear. Being honest about it helps them get your settings right.
  4. Fit and comfort check. You’ll make sure they sit comfortably and stay put (no sore spots, no whistling).
  5. Hands-on basics. How to put them in and take them out, charge them, keep them clean, and change settings.
  6. App setup. You’ll download the companion app so you can make simple adjustments and receive remote support and updated settings from your provider.
  7. Your plan going forward. What to expect as you adjust over the coming weeks, and how to reach us if something isn’t right.

How long does a hearing aid fitting take?

Plan for about 45 minutes to an hour for a first fitting. There’s a lot to cover, and you shouldn’t feel rushed. Follow-up adjustments are usually much shorter, and can be handled remotely through your app.

How to prepare for your first fitting

A little preparation makes the appointment smoother:

  • Bring your hearing test results if they aren’t already with us
  • Bring your phone or tablet (and know your passcode) so we can set up the app together
  • Write down your toughest listening situations (restaurants, meetings, one-on-one at home) so we can prioritize them
  • Bring a friend or family member if you can; hearing a familiar voice helps you judge the fit
  • Come with realistic expectations. Hearing aids are excellent, but your brain needs a little time to readjust. The first day is a starting point
  • Bring your questions. No question is too small! This is exactly the time to ask

What about self-fitting hearing aids?

You may have seen “self-fitting” hearing aids advertised. These are devices you program yourself using an app, without a professional. They can work for some people with mild, straightforward hearing loss who are comfortable with technology and troubleshooting on their own.

The trade-off is that you’re doing the provider’s job yourself, with no one to check the physical fit, catch an ear-health issue, diagnose and fix repairs, or fine-tune the sound when something feels off. At Prescription Hearing, even our remote fittings include a licensed provider so you get the convenience of doing it from home and the expertise of a professional setting you up correctly. You’re never on your own with it.

Hearing aid fitting FAQ

Do I need a fitting, or can I just wear my new hearing aids out of the box?

You need a fitting. Hearing aids must be programmed to your specific hearing loss to work properly. With us, that’s done in the office or remotely. If your hearing aids ship to you, they arrive pre-programmed with a virtual fitting to finish the setup.

Can I get fitted without coming into the office?

Yes. Experienced wearers can be fitted entirely remotely using a smartphone or iPad, with a licensed provider guiding the session. First-timers often prefer coming in, but it’s your choice.

Will my hearing aids sound perfect right away?

Usually not on day one, and that’s normal. Your fitting sets a comfortable starting point, and your provider fine-tunes from there as your brain readjusts over the following weeks.

How many appointments will I need?

Often just the initial fitting plus one or two brief follow-ups to fine-tune. Many follow-up adjustments can be done remotely, some without even scheduling a live session.

Is there a fee for fittings?

Your first 60 days of care are included in our Standard Care package. If you choose to come to our office for your follow-up visits after the first 60 days, there is a $50 office visit charge plus a $95 programming fee. We also offer our concierge service for online-only fittings after the first 60 days for a $95/online fitting session.

We also offer a Complete Care package for $250 that covers 3 years of unlimited fine-tuning and maintenance visits, in person or online.
