Cleaning Hearing Aids - 4 Easy How-To Steps, Including Specific Types

Cleaning Hearing Aids 101

You take your car in for oil changes, right? Hearing aids are like many other investments you make; they need routine cleaning and care. Your hearing aids go through the wringer – sweat, earwax, and other body oils – so regular care will prolong the life and quality of your hearing aids. Before I go into the 4 steps on cleaning hearing aids, I’ll tell you what hearing aid cleaning tools you’ll need and some tips on what not to do.

Hearing Aid Cleaning Tools Needed:

There are many stores or online options you can buy hearing aid cleaning kits from that contain most of these tools listed above. Likewise, some multi-tools can be purchased as well. There are other items you can use for hearing aid cleaning as well:

It is essential to make sure the disinfectant wipes are for hearing aid cleaning use only.

Your hearing aids are very valuable, so you must be delicate with them, especially around the microphone and receiver.

Tips on What Not to do When Cleaning Hearing Aids

Now you have all your hearing aid cleaning supplies, so let’s get into how to clean hearing aids at home.

4 Steps on Cleaning Hearing Aids

In-the-ear (ITE)/Custom, receiver-in-the-canal (RIC), and behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids all will follow these 4 steps. Here you can see two very simplistic videos on cleaning.

  1. While holding your hearing aid upside down, use the brush to gently clean microphone ports, covering, vent openings, and receiver of any wax or dirt.
  2. To remove wax and other debris from air vent, use a wax pick.
    • For larger vents, use vent cleaner to run through opening in each direction carefully.
  3. Click on one of the below options for specific cleaning instructions:
  4. Finally, wipe down the entire hearing aid with a soft, dry cloth.
Stick with new wax filter being inserted

Cleaning ITE Hearing Aids

- Use hearing aid brush to wipe away debris from the wax filter. If it doesn’t come clean, you can switch out the filter.
There is a stick with a new wax filter on one side, use the other side to remove the filter. Once removed, place new one in and tap it with finger to ensure it stays. Then continue to step 4.

Cleaning hearing aids
Thumbs gently massaging dome to remove debris

Cleaning RIC Hearing Aids

-Use your thumbs to gently workout debris from the dome piece. You can change out the dome as well if it doesn’t come clean. Make sure to press on dome when switch firmly.
Likewise, there is a wax filter under the dome, so follow the same instructions for ITE.

Cleaning BTE Hearing Aids

-Earmold can be removed and washed with warm soapy water. Dry completely before attaching back to hearing aid.
Use a bulb blower to assist.

Though cleaning hearing aids is vital to do - it is also important to know how to clean your ears properly.

Rexton Hearing Aids - Completely Generic Yet Extraordinary Merit

Rexton hearing aids

What are Rexton Hearing Aids?

There are many different types and brands of hearing aids available. Like Signia Hearing Aids, they are hearing aids with the leading innovating technology. Also similar to Signia Hearing Aids, they are produced by the same company – Sivantos.

Rexton hearing aids are the generic brand of Signia. Generic brands sometimes give us this feeling that it doesn’t work quite as well as name brands, but that is far from reality. Rexton hearing aids have the same hardworking engineers producing them as Signia does.

The biggest difference between generic (Rexton) versus name brand (Signia) is the capabilities that are available – not how well they function. Here is a list of what to expect from this article:

Signia Versus Rexton Hearing Aids

Prescription Hearing and Sivantos
have partnered together to provide
you with quality service and products.

They offer two brands, as you now know, as Signia and the generic version, Rexton.

See for yourself how these two brands differ. These 6 products can be purchased from Prescription Hearing. There are tables below showing each product's available features.

Why go Generic? Are you Unsure if You Should Choose Generic or a Name-Brand?

I recently read an article by Jill Nystul called "Generic vs. Name Brand: Which Should You Buy?" In Jill's article, she is referring to medications, foods, and cleaning products; Nonetheless, the facts provided follow the same basis in regards to hearing aids.

In most cases, generic brands are cheaper than their name-brand counterpart. For example, the Rexton Stellar 40 is $203 cheaper than the Signia Charge & Go 3X. Sometimes price is different based on ingredients, parts used, or difference in capabilities. We can see that in the pricing difference with Signia and Rexton hearing aids.

Money alone can be reason enough for people to go with generic brands. I know even saving a dollar, I feel like that is a win. I also know you may have the same thought process as my husband, who says, "if you pay for something, might as well get the best." It depends on what your lifestyle is like when making this choice.

As you saw above in each table, the only difference between Signia and Rexton Hearing Aids was the 'audiologist app adjustments.' This means that any adjustments your audiologists need to make can be made over an app, so no office visit is required.

With Rexton hearing aids, this option is not available, so any adjustments would require an in-person visit to their office. Whereas Signia hearing aids, you can stay home or at work having those adjustments made for you.

Likewise, making this choice will depend on your lifestyle. Do you have the time to make office visits when necessary? This ties in with the pricing – convenience. It is the same way with buying food that is precut for you.

As I said before, the quality of both hearing aid brands is exceptional. They do Rexton Stellar 40 is a step down in technology from the Rexton 80 & 60. Similarily, Signia Charge & Go 3X is a step down from Signia 5X & 7X; here is where you can find a chart showing Signia comparisons.

To assist with your choice here is a simple list of 3 various lifestyles and what hearing aids are recommended for them.

Less active lifestyles who are sometimes in noisy environments.

Semi-active lifestyles who are often in noisy environments.

Signia Hearing Aids - The Latest Innovative Technology

Why is Signia Hearing Aids the Top Innovators

Within just a few years of launching, Signia is leading the industry in innovation. It has already advanced to one of the top 3 hearing aid brands worldwide!

Signia engineers are working endlessly to provide nearly invisible hearing aids that give you clear cut hearing in a multitude of environments. Signia hearing aids process a perfect balance between natural sound and speech intelligibility.

Speech intelligibility is a measure of how well someone can understand speech in given conditions; Conditions being the type of environment you are in (ex. sitting in a mildly quite home vs. in a bustling restaurant).

Now there is a new game-changer that Signa innovators have released:

Signia Hearing Aids
Pure Charge&Go X

I will continue telling you beautiful people about this new innovative hearing aid, more about Signia, and the products that Prescription Hearing provides.

NEW!! Pure Charge&Go X

It's essential to have technology that can keep up with our lifestyles. As people are always moving around throughout their days, they need a hearing aid that can produce quality sound

You can't afford to miss things, and now you don't have to. You can continue your day as usual and hear all conversations without skipping a beat with the newest Signia hearing aids, Pure Charge&Go X.

I Don't Want to Miss a Thing

It's not just a fantastic Aerosmith song, but the anthem to all our lives. No one wants to miss out on what is happening in the world around them.

These Signia hearing aids are equipped with acoustic-motion sensing technology. What does this mean exactly?

There are robust acoustic sensors combined with motion sensors that link sound processing to measure more sound in real-time than ever experienced. This means they’re able to understand YOUR hearing environment and what YOU'RE doing to deliver sound tailored to YOU.

The new Signia hearing aids technology is called Signia Xperience.

Easy Connectivity with Devices, People, and the World Around You

Own Voice Processing

In addition to acoustic-motion sensors presenting you with crystal clear sound, there is another feature called Own Voice Processing (OVP).

Before, it was hard to find a good balance between your surrounding noises and your voice. Your voice probably overpowered on many occasions; with OVP, this gives a more natural hearing experience.

OVP can process the wearer's own voice instantly and independently from other voices and surrounding sounds. Thus, giving you a balanced sound at all times.

The goal is to make your hearing as natural and best as possible, including making your life easier by having sound stream straight to your ears with Bluetooth connectivity.

Bluetooth Connectivity

It is easier than ever now to connect multiple devices. You can now seamlessly stream sound from your TV or Smartphone straight to your Signia hearing aids.

Stream directly from your TV to no longer fail to hear what was said on the Discovery Channel (or whatever it is you fancy). No more broken phone conversations either since you can connect to your Smartphone. Don’t forget you can get down to your favorite song also!

Here is another article that I talk more about Bluetooth hearing aids.

If you find that you need to change any of its settings there is a discreet way in doing so.

Discreet Control

By downloading the Signia App (iPhone or Android), you can make any changes you find necessary. This is a discreet way to control volume or other settings.

Bonus, by using this app, you can contact your hearing care professional for assistance; This means no going out of your way for an in-office visit.

Energized for the Day like You are

Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Power Cell

Rechargeable Signia hearing aids are a game-changer. Pure Charge&Go X has longer lasting power than others. It only takes 3 to 4 hours for a full charge that lasts you ALL day, including through Bluetooth streaming.

You can charge them overnight while you're asleep. As you sleep to regain your energy, so too do these Signia hearing aids. If you are short on time, though, no worries, a quick 30-minute charge can give you up to 6 hours of usage.

The built-in power cell eliminates having to change out batteries. With no battery door, it gives a beautifully sleek design for comfort.

OneShell Design

The elegant housing can be exchanged whenever you please. There are 10 different colors that are available.

Got Hearing Aid Feedback? See 3 Effortless Fixes

Got Hearing Aid Feedback?

Hearing aid technology is becoming much more advance as time goes on. We are lucky to be living in such a wonderful time. Hearing aids have made it possible for people with hearing loss to listen to their favorite song, the wind rustling leaves in trees, the joy in their loved one’s voices, and whatever else your heart desires.

Sadly, some errors will occur; the most common is hearing aid feedback. You already don’t want noticeable hearing aids, and that high-pitched squealing is not helping. Don’t let hearing aid feedback be the reason you do not purchase hearing aids, though. Feedback is completely normal and easily fixable.

This article will go over what hearing aid feedback is, what causes feedback in hearing aids, and how to get rid of feedback.

What is Hearing Aid Feedback?

Hearing aid feedback noise is a whistling, squealing, loud buzz, static, or screech that comes when sound waves escaping your ear go back into the hearing aid microphone and then amplifies it AGAIN. This type of feedback is called acoustical feedback. There are three different types of hearing aid feedback.

Electronic feedback is when there is an issue with the electrical circuits in the hearing device. When the hearing aid speaker touches the hearing aid case, it produces vibrations; this is mechanical feedback. Unfortunately, both of these issues will need an expert to correct them.

What Causes Feedback in Hearing Aids?

Some common causes of feedback are broken tubing, volume too high for some frequencies, poorly fitted hearing aids, or built-up earwax.

Here are 3 Effortless Ways on How to Stop Hearing Aid Feedback

  1. Reposition your hearing aid. Sometimes it can be as simple as taking your hearing aids out and reinserting them back in. If the hearing aid feedback noise appeared suddenly, it could have become loose. When placing the dome or earmold back into your ear, pull on your earlobe to ensure it sits snug and proper in the canal.
  2. Remove built-up earwax. If repositioning did not help, there could be earwax that is obstructing your ear canal. Even though earwax is naturally occurring and has a role in protecting your ears, there can be an excess build-up. You can use an earwax kit from most drugstores to clean your ears. The sound waves then will be able to travel through the clean ear canal unobstructed. For good measure, you can also clean your hearing aids to make sure nothing is clogging them.
  3. Refit and see your provider. If repositioning and cleaning still do not stop hearing aid feedback, check if your hearing aids fit wrongly. Loose-fitting hearing aids allow noise to escape from your canal and thus cause that acoustical feedback. To check if they are loose, create a barrier between the gaps by placing a small amount of petroleum jelly on the device. Push it gently and a bit deeper. If the feedback doesn’t occur, then it most likely is due to it being loose-fitting.
If you need to reshape your mold or the above options, do not prevent feedback, speak with a provider.
hearing aid feedback
The Signia Silk Nx will likely not have acoustical feedback issues because their silicon earmolds shape to your ear canal for the perfect fit.

No More Hearing Aid Feedback!

Now you know all about feedback, the three different types, some causes, and three different methods on how to get rid of feedback. So, there is no reason to be afraid of getting hearings aids. As I said before, don’t let the fear of judgment or hassle stop you from buying hearing aids.

ONE – It is really dangerous to ignore your hearing problems due to fear. John Hopkins talks about cognitive issues and more with leaving hearing loss unchecked.

TWO – As you now have seen, feedback is an easy fix.

THREE – You even have the option to go through most (if not all) the process online.

Cell Phone Usage

I'm sure some of you have experienced this (and if you haven't count yourself lucky) with modern hearing aids and you try to talk on a cell phone, but there is this whistling occurring. This is due to interference happening from radiofrequency emitted by your cell phone.

This causes it to be nearly impossible to talk on the phone; Though it's not the case anymore. Using Bluetooth Hearing Aids to connect to your cell phone makes calls crystal clear.

By streaming directly to your hearing aids, it eliminates environmental noises that usually are getting in the way. Enjoy your calls at Starbucks (or another local coffee shop), on a walk, or in a noisy subway – the options are endless.

This article by the FDA gives a good explanation of choosing cell phones suitable for Bluetooth Hearing Aids and what their M ratings mean.

Watching TV/Streaming Music

Watching TV can be hard with hearing loss. Even at max volume, the conversation can seem distant or mumbled. Headphones are an alternative to watching TV or listening to music. Still, they can get uncomfortable and can be potentially dangerous.

You can eliminate the use of headphones by streaming TV or music straight to your hearing aids. Sound is more precise, and it is safer to use than headphones.

How Do Bluetooth Hearing Aids Work?

Bluetooth hearing aids

In general, Bluetooth helps two or more electronic devices share information or sound wirelessly. It uses high-frequency radio waves to share this information.

With hearing aids, Bluetooth slightly differs. They use what is called Bluetooth low energy, which reduces the amount of power consumed yet maintains its ability to communicate information efficiently.

Here is a video by WebMD to show how hearing aids, in general, transmit sound to your ear.

How Do I Connect and Use My Bluetooth Hearing Aids?

Do not worry there are several videos to help with any questions you have.

Regulation Law Update Coming in 2020:

I talk about this a bit in a different article but wanted to go over an important fact. The new regulation law says there will be a new category of hearing aids - over-the-counter hearing aids.

With this option, customers can do their fitting, programming, and control it without a professional. This seems like a benefit but can be dangerous as well.

It is always good to seek the help of a professional. They can tell you how severe your hearing loss is. There are sounds you may not even realize you were missing. So, always refer to an audiologist - they're the expert.

Top 3 Reasons to Buy Hearing Aids Online

Hearing Aids Online:
Stats on Hearing Loss

Like most things in life, as we get older, certain abilities begin to decline in their performance. Our hearing is not excluded from this. John Hopkins Cochlear Center for Hearing and Public Health has found that 54.6% of people age 70-79 have hearing loss. That percentage increases as we get older.

So basically, most people, at some point in their life, will need hearing aids.

What isn’t an issue though, is finding hearing aids. It is easier than ever now. You can buy hearing aids online. Pretty spectacular, huh?

I am here for you to aid in making this process go as smooth as butter. I will inform you on why to buy hearing aids online and how Prescription Hearing can help you with this.

Why You Should Buy Hearing Aids Online

I get how buying products online can be somewhat nerve-racking. You always wonder, am I really going to get what is pictured and described here? You don't have those fears when purchasing from a reliable seller though, let's say like Prescription Hearing.

There are three main points as for ‘why you should buy hearing aids online,’ so listen up =]

hearing aids online

1. Save Money

Money is a prime reason for many. Generally, a pair of hearing aids can cost about $5,000. Buying hearing aids online directly lowers these costs.

Save more by not worrying about paying for your gas, a friend’s, a city bus, or an uber.

*An added bonus: not driving to an appointment reduces your carbon footprint. Win: Win!

2. Save Time

Along with saving money by not driving, you’ll also save time. It always seems when we have an appointment, there is traffic. I’m not sure why that is. Maybe the universe just needed a good laugh that day; either way, that is a big waste of time.

Then after waiting in traffic for an hour, you have to wait another hour in the office. They are running slightly behind today but enjoy those uncomfortable seats with boring magazines they have provided.

Online shopping makes all of this disappear. You can shop at any time you want in the comfort of your own home. It doesn't matter if you are an early riser or a night owl, any time works if it works for you.

3. Less Stress

Crowded areas can be pretty exhausting to deal with (some would say that is empathic behavior). Anyways, whether you have to engage in conversation or are hitting elbows with the stranger next to you – it is no fun at times.

What also is not fun? Pain. It can be a tough commute if you have bad hips, back, knees or other types of pain. Buying hearing aids online you are able to skip all these unnecessary troubles.

It is crucial to buy hearing aids when you start to notice hearing impairment. A study performed found that using hearing aids early on in hearing issues will help to reduce the effect of cognitive decline later in life.

Cognition, simply put, is our mind taking in knowledge and using that for thinking, reasoning, or remembering.

Prescription Hearing gives several guarantees for you:

What are you waiting for? Schedule an appointment with them. There is nothing to lose, but so much to gain.

Regulation Law Change Coming in 2020

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a letter in 2018, stating that there will be a new category for over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. The plan is for consumers to have access to new technologies and the consumers' protection to be well-balanced.

This letter also states, "The protections include output limits, appropriate labeling, advisements about when to consult with a licensed health care practitioner, and guidance on when a premarket review by FDA would be required."
